THE TWELVE

"The Twelve" is an avant-garde studio recording project and live performance vehicle based on 3 powerful new string quartet compositions (4 movements for each quartet) written by visionary composer Jay Terrien. The unique concept of this project stems from the fact that there is not a lot of contemporary published scores that showcase various types of the electric bass (i.e., fretted, fretless, piccolo, subcontra, tenor bass, etc.), drums, and string quartet together in a prominent spotlight.

The primary recording and live performance aspect of this music will feature the unique duo partnership of a high-caliber bassist and cutting-edge drummer performing alongside some of the best avant-garde and classical "Eventide Ultra-Harmonizer prepared" string quartets in the scene! There are many technical aspects within these 3 string quartets that are best expressed through the performance strengths and acumen of several handpicked professional musical interpreters who often commission and perform these types of "high-end" compositions. Only a handful of bassists, drummers, and string quartets can handle the performance rigors of this music.

As you can imagine, it would be musically and visually remarkable to experience notable performers such as bassist Michael Manring and drummer Terry Bozzio locking up alongside The Zapp Quartet. How about the performance combination of Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, Pat Mastelotto and The Kronos Quartet? Or, perhaps Mark Egan bashing with Chad Smith while the edgy, rocking sound of The Section Quartet supports their rhythmic power? It will also be AMAZING to see how musicians from different backgrounds/genres, mesh and collaborate together in a recording studio environment. An "in-studio" DVD is also in the works. Ultimately, the creation of well-known performance "micro-ensembles" specifically matched to a given composition will serve as a powerful marketing and promotional tool, potentially pushing this project into the mainstream.

"The Twelve" punctuates the undeniable auditory chemistry that exists between the electric bass, an electronically prepared string quartet, and improvised hybrid acoustic/electronic percussions in a structured, compositional environment.

With a sound business model involving a forward-thinking digital distribution strategy, DVD/CD sales, and a stellar offline sheet music publishing revenue stream, "The Twelve" is poised for the budgetary involvement of pertinent record labels and Grammy-centric musicians/producer candidates such as Edgar Meyer, Andy Summers, Bela Fleck, Les Claypool, Dave Matthews, Sting, Adrian Belew, Steve Vai, Stanley Clarke, Trey Anastasio, Daniel Lanois, etc. They are music aficionados who will certainly appreciate the business model and admire the progressive musical principals addressed within the pieces.

Here are some rough demo mixes (with midi strings and just one track of bass) from my new String Quartet No. 69, "The Myers Quartet". The final studio recordings will have fretless bass tracks (as heard on the Sibelius "Scorch" session files below) and of course, they will also have improvised hybrid acoustic/electronic drum arrangements underneath. You can also check out the live videos and full scores below!

Compositionally, I aimed for a very crisp, bright, aggressive, and edgy sound written for physical instruments and performers that can take full advantage of working under the auspices of general/customizable preset guidelines for individual Eventide H8000FW Ultra-Harmonizer® effects processor units.

In an ideal world, it would sound AMAZING if all of the performers would be playing graphite-based or composite-strengthened instruments along the lines of Zon, Status Graphite basses, Rainsong Graphite acoustic guitars, Luis and Clark carbon-fiber classical instruments, etc., as well as carbon-fiber based acoustic drums and percussion devices.
